A Leader of Leaders

September 16, 2010

Now, normally I’m not a political activist nor do I ever wish to find a calling in this field. But I recently read an e-mail that intrigued my leadership bone. In a world of followers and ‘you-do-it’ leaders, this Prime Minister stood out to me. It’s takes a lot of strength to reach the position of the Prime Minister of a nation. But it takes a lot of character to remain with values such as this Prime Minister from Australia. I have not altered this e-mail and have chosen to share this with you. As you read this I hope you are moved to change the World and ultimately…..CHANGE YOUR WORLD. Here’s the e-mail entitled TRUE LEADERSHIP:

Australia says NO – Second Time he

has done this

He’s done it again..

He sure isn’t backing down on his hard line stance and

one has to appreciate his belief in the rights of his native

countrymen.

A breath of fresh air to see someone lead.  I wish some

leaders would step up in Canada & USA.

Australian Prime Minister does it again!!

This man should be appointed King of the World…Truer words have never been spoken.

It took a lot of courage for this man to speak what he had to say for the world

to hear.  The retribution could be phenomenal, but at least he was willing to

take a stand on his and Australia ‘s beliefs.

Whole world needs a leader like this!

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd – Australia

Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia, as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks…

Separately, Rudd angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation’s mosques. Quote:

‘IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT.. Take It Or Leave It.
I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali , we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians. ‘

‘This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom’

‘We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society . Learn the language!’

‘Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.’

‘We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.’

‘This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, ‘THE RIGHT TO LEAVE’.’

‘If you aren’t happy here then LEAVE. We didn’t force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.’

Principles of Effective Christian Leadership

August 14, 2010

by Rev. Bruce Goettsche

Colossians 1:24-29

I was eager to read the book Iaccoca by Lee Iacocca, the former Chairman of the Chrysler Corporation. I was fascinated by the way this man took a company from virtual bankruptcy to success. I wanted to learn how he someone could do what he did. Last year I eagerly read The Road Ahead by Bill Gates of Microsoft. He has his finger on the pulse of technology and I wanted to hear what he had to say. We often buy books by politicans, athletes, Scientists and Doctors because we want to learn the lessons that made them successful.

In the text before us the Apostle Paul reveals his principles of effective Christian Leadership. They are principles that govern his life. But these are principles not just for the Pastor, teacher or Board Member . . . they are principles valuable to every Christian because they point us to true discipleship. These are not the same principles you will find in contemporary books on management. These are uniquely Christian principles.

Effective Christian Leaders Are Willing to Pay the Price

Paul begins “Now I rejoice in what was suffered for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of the church.” (1:24). Paul rejoices in what “was suffered for you.” What is he referring to here? Look at the preceding verses and you realize that Paul is referring to the sacrifice of Christ for our sin. Paul is grateful for Christ’s work in their life.

But there is more to this statement. He also says “I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of the church.” He began by talking about Christ’s afflictions, now he is talking about his own. The phrase “what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions” is awkward. It’s not that Christ’s death on the cross was lacking anything. Paul realizes that the suffering he is experiencing is really directed at Christ and in that sense is still Christ’s affliction. Paul says there is a price to pay to lead…

These statements should not surprise us. Jesus warned us. He said, “Remember the words I spoke to you: ‘No servant is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.” [John 15:20].

Paul goes into some detail about his sufferings in 2 Corinthians 11,

“Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my own countrymen, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false brothers. I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked. Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches. Who is weak, and I do not feel weak? Who is led into sin, and I do not inwardly burn? If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.”

Notice that Paul identifies several sources of suffering. There is overwhelming physical suffering. He was attacked, beaten and left for dead. All this because of his proclamation of the gospel. This may not happen to churchgoers in our country very often but it is happening in other countries. The world is becoming increasingly hostile to the Christian message. And as we have seen, people are resorting to violence to address their grievances more and more.

Paul tells us that he is also threatened by the Gentiles. In other words, he faces the subtle antagonism of non-believers.. Here is something we should be able to relate to. Every time we take a stand for Christ, we become a target. If you take a leadership position, you become a bigger target. This is often much more subtle and subversive. People will exclude you, ridicule you, criticize you behind your back. Just recently we saw the criticism leveled at Reggie White of the Green Bay Packers for holding to what the Bible said about various moral behaviors.

Third, he faces suffering from false brothers. These are Devastating attacks from within the church. In Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, Caesar is killed by a group of assailants. A famous line is “et tu, Brutè?” Caesar was stunned that one he thought was a friend would turn on him. Anyone who has served in the church for any length of time understands this feeling. Some of the most painful blows come from these “false brothers” the ones we thought were our friends. It would be nice if everyone in the church applied God’s commands to love, kindness and encouragement. It would be nice, but it is not the way it is.

Paul identifies one other source of suffering: “I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches. Who is weak, and I do not feel weak? Who is led into sin, and I do not inwardly burn?” One of the most painful aspects of Christian leadership is the heartbreak of sharing people’s pain. It’s tough to listen to the heartache that goes on in so many lives. It’s devastating to see someone who is acting out of rebellion to the Lord. It hurts every time I stand at a casket as a family says their final goodbyes. The closer I am to the family. The more it hurts.

There is a price to be paid to be an effective leader. There is a price for taking a stand for Christ. You need to know and prepare for this cost before you begin.

"Shaping Leaders For The Future"

1801 Toberman St. Los Angeles, CA 90015 – That’s the address of one of the most powerful houses in the America. Just ask my Lord. This house has produced some the most powerful young men & women within the ministries of Victory Outreach International. This location has some of the greatest happenings take place that the city of L.A. has ever seen. I’ve seen hundreds upon hundreds of young people come thru these doors and experience the Power of God like never before in their lives. This house has more stories than Dr. Seuss.

You would think that this house, being that it has such great spiritual equity inside of it, would be located in such a great neigborhood. By God’s divine purpose, it’s located right in the prime location to fulfill the call of God for the Urban Training Center. In all 4 directions of the house are all 4 different cultures. Just South is the campus of USC where there are so many Alpha Beta Kapa Sorority/Frat houses. Towards the East is Dowtown/L.A. Live where the world-class happenings of Hollywood, from the Grammy’s to Exclusive Movie Premieres, all take place. Towards the West are so many cultures ranging from Korea Town to Hollywood’s elite stars. And of course to the North….or just above us…or right in front of us….is THE HOOD. All we do is walk outside to the nice, fresh smell of smog & delicious elotes (Spanish for corn). Every once in a while, the local Los Angeleans have a family shootout. Oh….those family spats (sarcasm right there).

Some may try to move out of such a neighborhood but this is where we flourish. Our students love witnessing in Skid Row, preaching to the drug addict, and help change the gang member. On 1 occasion, one of our students from Kansas City, Victor, was witnessing to one of the local gang members. As he witnessed to him, the young men left the encounter thinking about what Victor had told him but didn’t want to change at that moment. Then, some months later, while some of our UTC students were doing laundry in the local area, a shootout happened and the students were nearby. This is where we see this young man’s testimony take place:

Position Leadership vs. Lifestyle Leadership

April 27, 2010

Just some time ago we had a powerful, beautiful, awesome, extravagant, spectacular, tremendous, (I think you get the picture)….woman of God come and speak to the future leaders of this generation. Of course, I’m talking about Pastor Joesy Pineda of Victory Outreach Church of Hayward, CA. Being that she is my mother (hence the opening references) she was able to make a stop into the West Coast Urban Training Center for a time of teaching on the subject of leadership. Now, you may think I’m bias but I’m telling you, she is one of the best teachers I’ve heard on topical subjects. If you’ve ever sat under her then you know what I’m talking about.

You must remember, this is a woman who has her own library….literally. When you walk into her room(s) of books, you think, “Did I bring my library card?  Cause I want to check out some books.” You feel like you’re in a cartoon for a moment because you look up, you look down, you look all around and it’s nothing but books, journals, workbooks, tapes, cd’s, magazines, computers, and more.  It consists of thousands of commentaries, paperbacks, hard covers, leadership, church, marriage, financial, prophetic, parenting, singles-lifestyle, youth, I mean….you name it. It’s there. From old to right off the presses. She’s got it….and reads it. There’s probably even a book in there signed by Moses somewhere…j/k. Altogether, she is a woman who is a great reader and a powerful teacher. And when she came to the UTC, she ‘brought it.’

Here is a lil’ sample of the teaching given to our Leaders of the Future at the West Coast UTC:

LEADERSHIP IS NOT A POSITION, IT’S A LIFESTYLE!

NUMBERS 16:9 “DOES IT SEEM A SMALL THING TO YOU THAT THE GOD OF ISRAEL HAS SEPARATED YOU, HAS CHOSEN YOU FROM AMONG ALL THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL, TO BRING YOU NEAR TO HIMSELF TO DO THE SERVICE OF THE TABERNACLE OF THE LORD, AND TO STAND BEFORE THE PEOPLE TO MINISTER UNTO THEM?”

MOSES IS ASKING THE LEADERS, IS IT A SMALL THING THAT GOD HAS CALLED YOU AND SEPARATED YOU AND CHOSEN YOU FROM EVERYONE ELSE TO ALLOW YOU TO DO THE WORK OF THE LORD AND SERVE HIS PEOPLE?  IS THE POSITION OF LEADERSHIP MORE IMPORTANT TO YOU THAN LIVING THE LIFESTYLE OF A LEADER?  IS THE STATUS OF BEING A LEADER MORE VALUABLE TO YOU THAN YOUR CALLING TO LEAD?

IT’S ONE THING TO UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF THE WORD LEADERSHIP, BUT QUITE ANOTHER THING TO LIVE IT.

LEADERSHIP IS A WORD WIDELY USED.  THE SYNONYMS FOR “LEADING” ARE:  PILOTING, GUIDING, OFFERING DIRECTION, INFLUENCING, EFFECTING, HEADING UP, SHOWING THE WAY BY GOING IN FRONT.

TODAY OUR COUNTRY HAS MANY GUTLESS LEADERS.  THEY HAVE THE POSITION, BUT NOT THE LIFESTYLE OR MORALITY TO BACK IT UP.  THEY HAVE THE TITLE, BUT DO NOT DEVELOP THE INTEGRITY TO CHANGE SO THAT EVENTUALLY THEY ARE CRUSHED BY THE WEIGHT OF THE TITLE.  YOU HAVE BEEN BROUGHT TO THIS MINISTRY FOR “SUCH A TIME AS THIS.” WE NEED LEADERS WHO WILL MAKE THE RIGHT DECISIONS WHEN THEY FIND THEMSELVES IN THE GRAY SHADOWS OF LIFE.  LEADERS WHO WILL STAND UP FOR WHAT THEY BELIEVE.  LEADERS WHO DON’T BLAME THEIR SNEAKY AND DISHONEST BEHAVIOR ON ANOTHER LEADER WHO IS NOT LIVING UP TO THE STANDARD OF LEADERSHIP.  SOME LEADERS LOOK AT OTHERS AND JUSTIFY THEMSELVES BY SAYING, “I SAW THEM DO IT.  I GUESS IT’S O.K.”

MOTHER TERESA WAS A WOMAN WHO LIVED OUT HER LEADERSHIP LIFESTYLE.  ONE OF THE QUOTES SHE HAS IS “I KNOW GOD WILL NOT GIVE ME ANYTHING I CAN’T HANDLE.  I JUST WISH HE DIDN’T TRUST ME SO MUCH.”

GOD IS WANTING TO TRUST YOU WITH MORE.  I WANT TO SHARE FOUR AREAS THAT I FEEL GOD WANTS YOU TO GROW IN.

CALL – COMPETENCY – CHARACTER – COMMITMENT

I. THE CALL

EPHESIANS 4:1 “WALK IN A MANNER WORTHY OF THE CALLING WITH WHICH YOU HAVE BEEN CALLED.”

WHAT MANNER ARE YOU WALKING IN?  WHAT ROAD ARE YOU ON?

THERE ARE THOSE OF YOU HERE THAT KNOW BEYOND A SHADOW OF A DOUBT THAT YOU HAVE BEEN CALLED.  YOU HAVE A POINT OF REFERENCE.  BUT THE BIBLE SAYS WE NEED TO WALK IN A CERTAIN MANNER.  YOU MAY NOW KNOW YOU’RE CALLED, BUT HOW ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO WALK?  WE HAVE BEEN CALLED TO WALK IN THE MANNER OF BEING A SERVANT LEADER.  WE HAVE BEEN CALLED TO A LIFE OF SERVICE TO GOD IN THE MIDST OF DEMANDING AND DESPERATE AND NEEDY PEOPLE.  YOU NEED TO SEE YOUR CALLING AS A CALL TO SERVE.

“A SERVANT IS IDENTIFIED BY HOW HE RESPONDS WHEN HE IS TREATED LIKE ONE.”

THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CHOOSING TO SERVE AND CHOOSING TO BE A SERVANT.

WHEN WE CHOOSE TO SERVE WE ARE STILL IN CHARGE.  WE DECIDE WHOM WE WILL SERVE AND WHEN WE WILL SERVE.  WE WORRY ABOUT ANYONE’S STEPPING ON US, OR TAKING CHARGE OVER US.  WE PICK OUR TIME TO SERVE, WE PICK THE PERSON WE WANT TO SERVE UNDER.

BUT WHEN WE CHOOSE TO BE A SERVANT, WE GIVE UP THE RIGHT TO BE IN CHARGE.  WE VOLUNTARILY CHOOSE TO BE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF, SO WE CANNOT BE MANIPULATED OR USED.

MANY OF YOU HERE THAT WERE BORN INTO CHRISTIANITY, OR YOU’VE BEEN AROUND A LONG TIME…YOU CAN LOSE YOUR FEAR OF GOD AND JUST DRIFT ALONG.

  • WE’VE LOST OUR FEAR WHEN WE ARE DIPPING INTO THE OFFERING AND JUSTIFYING IT
  • WE’VE LOST OUR FEAR WHEN WE TRY TO MANIPULATE PEOPLE’S LIVES
  • WE’VE LOST OUR FEAR WHEN WE LACK MORAL PURITY.
  • GO SEEKING ADMIRATION OR APPROVAL FROM A MAN.

SOME PEOPLE CARE MORE ABOUT THE POWER OF LEADERSHIP THAN HOLINESS; MORE ABOUT WHAT THEY’RE DOING AND LESS ABOUT WHO THEY ARE AND WHAT THEIR CALLING IS.  MORE ABOUT WHAT THEY ARE GOING TO WEAR AND WHAT MATERIAL THINGS THEY HAVE, THAN THE CONDITION OF THEIR HEART.

PRIDE IS SUCH A SUBTLE ENEMY OF A LEADER.  THERE ARE ALWAYS TEMPTATIONS FOR PRIDE AND SELF-PROMOTION.  MANY OF US ARE AFRAID TO TRUST THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD BECAUSE WE WANT TO BE SURE THAT WE GET CREDIT FOR ALL WE DO.  THIS IS A ‘LEADERSHIP’ SEMINAR.  I WONDER IF WE CHANGED THE NAME AND CALLED THIS A SEMINAR FOR ‘SERVANTS’, HOW MANY WOULD COME?

LEADERSHIP IS NOT A POSITION, IT’S A LIFESTYLE.

II. COMPETENCY

COMPETENCY – IN THE WAY WE ACT AND THE WAY WE TREAT OTHERS

MANY PEOPLE HAVE SKILLS AND ABILITIES TO GET THINGS DONE….YOU ARE SO COMPETENT.  BUT YOU MIGHT HAVE A HORRIBLE ATTITUDE TOWARDS PEOPLE.  YOU USE AND ABUSE YOUR POSITION AS A LEADER TO MANIPULATE PEOPLE.  AS A LEADER, YOU HAVE TO DEAL WITH PEOPLE BUT DO YOU LIKE PEOPLE?  DO THEY LIKE YOU?  THE #1 REASON MOST  LEADERS FAIL IS A LACK OF COMPETENCE IN RELATIONSHIP SKILLS.  WE DON’T KNOW HOW TO WORK AS A TEAM WITH PEOPLE.

I READ IN A BOOK THIS SAYING, ”LORD GRANT ME THE SERENITY TO ACCEPT THE THINGS I CANNOT CHANGE, THE COURAGE TO CHANGE THE THINGS I CAN AND THE WISDOM TO HIDE THE BODIES OF THOSE PEOPLE I HAD TO KILL BECAUSE THEY PUSHED ME TOO FAR!”

IT WAS HARD FOR ME TO ACCEPT THE FACT THAT NOT EVERYONE LIKED ME.  BUT EVEN MORE THAN THAT…NOT EVERYONE LIKED OUR CHURCH.  I TOOK IT SO PERSONAL WHEN PEOPLE LEFT.  I FELT LIKE I HAD FAILED.  WHEN THEY LEFT, I JUST KNEW IT WAS MY FAULT.  THE FACT THAT PEOPLE HAVE LEFT YOUR CHURCH DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN YOU HAVE FAILED.  THERE ARE MANY THINGS OF WHICH WE HAVE NOT CONTROL.  THIS INCLUDES THE PEOPLE WHO DECIDE TO GO TO OUR CHURCHES OR NOT.

THERE ARE LEADERS WITHIN THE CHURCH WHO ARE COMPETING FOR MEMBERS.  THEY TALK TO ANOTHER LEADER SAYING, “HEY! THEY’RE IN MY MINISTRY.” AND THE POOR NEW CONVERT IS BEING PULLED TEN DIFFERENT WAYS.  WE HAVE OUR OWN “TURF BATTLES”.  THESE BATTLES BECOME A PROBLEM ONLY BECAUSE WE ARE LEADERS THAT ARE SMALL-MINDED.

PROVERBS 4:23 SAYS, “…ABOVE ALL ELSE, GUARD YOUR HEART, FOR IT AFFECTS EVERYTHING YOU DO.”

IF YOUR HEART ISN’T RIGHT, YOUR LEADERSHIP CAPABILITIES WILL BRING NO ETERNAL VALUE.

A LEADER IS NOT SOMEONE WHO CONTROLS OTHER PEOPLE, BUT SOMEONE WHO INSPIRES, SERVES AND LOVES.  COMMAND AND CONTROL IS OUT…LEADING AND INFLUENCE IS IN.

LEADERSHIP IS NOT A POSITION, IT’S A LIFESTYLE.

III. CHARACTER

CHARACTER HAS TO DO WITH OUR INTEGRITY AND MORALS.  WE NEED LEADERS WITH SOLID CHARACTERS.  SOME PEOPLE CARE MORE ABOUT THEIR ABILITIES INSTEAD OF THEIR CHARACTER.  YOU LOOK AROUND AND SAY, “WHY DIDN’T THEY PICK ME FOR THAT POSITION?  I’M BETTER THAN THEM.”  YOU MAY HAVE THE COMPETENCE, BUT DO YOU HAVE THE CHARACTER?

SOMETIMES WE INTENTIONALLY TRAIN FOR SKILLS AND CAPACITIES WHILE OUR CHARACTER IS PRESUMED TO BE THERE.  CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT DOESN’T JUST HAPPEN.   IT IS AN INTENTIONAL CHOICE OF BEHAVIOR.  WHY DO YOU WANT TO BE A LEADER?  FOR PRESTIGE, POSITION, FEELING OF IMPORTANCE, POSSESSIONS?  SPECIAL SEATING?

SOME PEOPLE CLIMB THE LADDER OF LEADERSHIP FAST – BUT IT’S BASED ONLY ON THEIR PERSONALITY AND ABILITIES, SO THEY CLIMB THE LADDER OF LEADERSHIP QUICKER AND FASTER.  DO YOU KNOW WHY IT’S FASTER?  BECAUSE THE LADDER OF LEADERSHIP WITH ABILITIES REQUIRES LESS TIME TO CLIMB THAN THE LADDER OF LEADERSHIP WITH CHARACTER.

ARE YOU A LEADER BECAUSE OF YOUR POSITION OR BECAUSE OF YOUR CHARACTER?

IV. COMMITMENT/LOYALTY

LOYALTY CANNOT BE BOUGHT; IT IS LOVING THE ONE YOU SERVE; WANTING THE ONE YOU LOVE TO BE BLESSED; STANDING AND TRUSTING IN THE ONE YOU SERVE.  I’VE SEEN FAITHFUL PEOPLE COME AND FAITHFUL PEOPLE GO.

WHY?  BECAUSE THEIR FAITHFULNESS HAD TO DO WITH WORKS.  THEY NEVER WENT TO THE NEXT STEP TO LOYALTY. FAITHFULNESS CAN STOP WHEN YOU GET HURT.  BUT A LOYAL PERSON WILL GUARD THEIR HEART AND NOT DEFEND THEMSELVES.  THEY ARE LOYAL TO GOD AND THOSE GOD PUTS OVER THEM.

PS. 3:3 SAYS, “BUT THOU O LORD ARE MY GLORY, YOU ARE MY SHIELD, YOU ARE THE LIFTER OF MY HEAD.”

LOYAL PEOPLE GUARD THEIR HEART.  THEY KNOW HOW TO PLAY HURT.

THE ABILITY TO DEVELOP LOYALTY COMES FROM INTIMACY.  SOME LEADERS ARE AFRAID TO ALLOW OTHER PEOPLE TO GET TOO CLOSE.  THEY ONLY ALLOW THEM TO GO SO FAR.  YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW.  IF YOU CAN’T BE LOYAL TO THOSE OVER YOU, HOW CAN YOU EXPECT THOSE UNDER YOU TO BE LOYAL.  WHAT GOES AROUND, COMES AROUND. IF YOU DON’T LOCK SPIRITS WITH YOUR PASTORS YOU WILL FIND YOURSELF BEING A WALL TO THE OTHERS IN THE CONGREGATION.

THE ENEMY OF INTIMACY IS COMPETITION.  THE ENEMY OF INTIMACY IS EGO. EGO MAKES US UNWILLING TO LEARN FROM OTHERS, AND EVEN FROM OUR OWN MISTAKES.  OUR EGO WOULD RATHER BLAME OTHERS.  EGO DOESN’T WANT TO LOOK BAD.

WE CAN’T DEVELOP LOYALTY WITH EGO RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE.

HOW CAN YOU TELL IF SOMEONE IS LOYAL?  BY THEIR GIVING AND THEIR ATTITUDE.  GIVING HAS TO BE ONE OF GIVING TO GOD, THEN TO PEOPLE.  YOU’VE GOT TO BE GIVING OF YOUR TIME, YOUR TALENTS AND YOUR TREASURE.

_________________________________________________________________________

ARE YOU WALKING IN A MANNER WORTHY OF THE CALLING IN YOUR LIFE?

ARE YOU TEACHABLE OR ARE YOU RELYING ON YOUR COMPETENCE TO SEE YOU THROUGH?

HOW DEEP IS YOUR CHARACTER?

HOW STRONG IS YOUR COMMITMENT AND LOYALTY?

LEADERSHIP IS NOT A POSITION…IT’S A LIFESTYLE.

Legacy Leaders

March 4, 2010

Such a powerful time we had with one of the General’s of the faith, Pastor Rick Alanis. It was more than just a 3 hour service to me, it was a place of receiving the orders for the next 40 years. If you were not able to make this LEGACY LEADERS event I would highly encourage you to try to obtain the CD. It was that good. When we as a West Coast UTC put this whole event together, all we did was expect the unexpected. That’s one thing I’ve learned from our founders – leave room for God to blow your mind.  And that’s what I always try to have within my ministry. I want God to do the impossible within my life. I never want the possibilities of only what I can do to show. Then it would never take faith. I want people to look and say, “Wow! That must be God because he sure can’t do that…”

Legacy Leadership at its best!

And that is exactly the kind of Legacy that I am taking a hold of. For over 40 years our ministry of Victory Outreach International has been an “impossible ministry” within our Inner-Cities. Why?…because the inner-city is known for violence, corruption, & death. So how could anything grow, or even live within a culture like that?  Well, that’s where Victory Outreach comes in. An “impossible” scenario with impossible” people. I love it! I wish I had the whole message here to give you but I do have a few key points from the message “HOW TO SHAPE LEADERS FOR THE FUTURE”:

How Can We Shape Leaders For Our Future?

1. Stay Focused on the Vision that God has given us.

–       We have to stay practicing, praying, & continue moving OUT the box!

–       We must stay in the Unified Effort – UNITED WE CAN!

2. Understanding the Season of Change. – Joshua 1:18

–       Change don’t happen overnight

–       Change has a ripping effect on those that won’t let go

–       We’ve got to change our attitude

–       We are not about to spend another 40 years in the Wilderness. It’s time to possess the Promisepossess the Land.

3. Higher Caliber of Leadership

–       You gotta stay right behind your leader

–       This helps bring commitment & longevity

"It's time to possess the Promise....possess the Land."

Carrot, Egg, or Coffee

February 18, 2010

The other day I was having some study time within my office when I came across a pretty good story that caught my attention. I love reading stories that tell of a deep, yet simple principle. I mean, after all, my favorite stories are in the Bible. I guess you could say I’m a story-reader and a story-teller. Even Jesus when he wanted to convey a profound truth to the multitudes or to His disciples, he would stop and tell them a ‘simple story’. There’s just something about reading a good story that beats a movie any day. Now, I usually don’t post up the whole story, maybe a quote or two from it, but I liked this one. I think it will really make someone think. I know it did with me. So here you go. The Carrot, the Egg, or the Coffee. Enjoy:

A daughter complained to her father about life and how hard things are for her. She said she wanted to give up as she was tired of struggling. For just as one problem was solved, another arose.

Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen, filled three pots with water and placed the fire on high.

Soon the three pots came to a boil. In one he placed carrots, in the other he placed eggs and in the last he placed ground coffee beans. He let them sit and boil, without saying a word. The daughter wondered what he was trying to do.

In half an hour he turned down the fire and took out the contents of the pots and put them in bowls. Turning to her he said, “My dear child, what do you see?” Smartly she replied, “Carrots, eggs and coffee.”

He brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After shelling it, she observed it was hard-boiled now. Finally, he asked her to take a sip of the fragrant coffee. She winced as it was very strong.

Humbly, she asked, “What does it mean father?” He explained, “Each of them faced the same adversity, 100oC of boiling water. However, each reacted differently. The carrot was strong, hard and unrelenting. But, after going through boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg was fragile. A thin outer shell protected a liquid centre. But after sitting in the boiling water, the inside became hardened. However, the coffee beans are unique. After they were in the boiling water, they became stronger and richer. Which one of these are you?” he asked.

Are you the carrot that seems hard but with the smallest amount of pain, adversity or heat, you wilt and become soft with no strength? Are you the egg, which starts off with a malleable heart? But after a death, breakup, divorce or layoff become hardened and stiff? Your shell looks the same but you are bitter and tough inside. Or are you like the coffee bean? The bean does not get its true flavour until it reaches 100oC. When the water gets hotter, it just tastes better. When things are at their worst, you get better.

So, my question to you today is:  how do you handle adversity? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

– Esteban Pineda
